Obama Can No Longer Hide His Arming of Mexican Drug Gangs
A federal judge has rejected Obama's assertion of executive privilege to deny Congress access to records pertaining to his Operation Fast and Furious in which thousands of guns were knowingly sold to Mexican drug gangs by order of the BATF.
Obama claims that he wants to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill, but his actions clearly demonstrate otherwise. Under Operation Fast & Furious, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) forced gun dealers to sell to buyers suspected of transporting the guns to Mexico. Assurances of immunity from prosecution and threats were used to ensure the gun dealers’ cooperation.
As intended, thousands of guns flowed to Mexican criminals, mostly drug gangs. The guns fueled violence and have caused the deaths of potentially thousands of people.
In 2010 the operation was exposed when Jesus Leonel Sanchez-Meza and Ivan Soto-Barraza killed U.S. Border Patrol Officer Brian Terry.
Terry was part of an elite tactical unit that had been in the Arizona desert to arrest “rip-off” gangs who robbed drug smugglers along the border. The unit was part of a federal effort to protect sanctioned drug gangs by targeting those who preyed on them.
Jesus Leonel Sanchez-Meza and Ivan Soto-Barraza were captured and charged with murder, conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery, attempted interference of commerce by robbery, assault on a federal officer and carrying a firearm during a crime of violence. They were each given life sentences.
It is curious that the court considered drug smuggling legitimate commerce and that it should be protected by prosecuting those who interfere with it.
When the guns used by the robbers were traced, Operation Fast & Furious was exposed. The BATF explained it as being a program to trace guns into Mexico and identify drug gangs. Yet, there was no mechanism to actually trace the guns and no guns were traced. The BATF had no means to trace the guns until they were used in a crime back in the US, confiscated and the serial number matched up.
The Whitehouse claims that it knew nothing of the operation yet refused to release documents related to the operation. To side-step Congressional pressure the Justice Dept. (DOJ) investigated itself and found that Fast & Furious was a misguided operation that upper level administrators were unaware of. The DOJ continued to withhold critical documents under orders by the Whitehouse and Attorney General Eric Holder was held in contempt after he refused to divulge documents.
The new ruling probably won’t shed any further light on the criminal operation because the really damning documents were destroyed or never existed in the first place.
The fact that the United States federal government actively supports the international drug trade may come as a surprise to many Americans but it is no secret. Bush, Clinton and administrations before them also supported the CIA’s international drug trade. It was Richard Nixon who formed the first U.S. Federal clandestine operation to eliminate rivals to U.S. drug operations.
The CIA quickly seized control over the international trade in heroin not long after the agency was formed just after WW II as a way to fund its many illegal black ops. When heroin could no longer feed its global criminal operations and the many who sought enrichment from it, the cocaine industry was created.
One of the reasons that the United States invaded Afghanistan was to restore the opium production that the Taliban had shut down. Since the occupation, opium production has been at record levels.
